COGCC: Methane Seepage Quantification around Natural Gas Production Wells

Oil and Gas Sector

COGCC contacted Koveva to investigate a methane seepage that was observed near a number of natural gas production wells near Rifle, Colorado. The objective of this study was to determine whether the methane seepage was a naturally occurring regional phenomenon, or whether faulty construction of the production wells lead to methane leakages around the wells. We performed a regional methane flux survey, conducted bradenhead pressure tests, and studied the well constructions to conclude that poor cement jobs caused methane seepages at the surface.
